I was sitting out on my lanai here in St. Petersburg, FL facing north when I saw this object mentioned shoot across the sky, coming from the west and moving east. I did see it fragment just before it burned up (a small piece broke away from the main body). Brighter than many objects that I’ve seen fall from the sky.
    This occured about 9:40 p.m. June 20, 2011
I was wondering if it was a meteor or just one of the many pieces of space “junk” we have up there burning up on reentry.

      Peter and All,

We have received several other report of this object. The average duration of these reports is 2-5 seconds which is much too short for space junk. Therefore I believe it was a natural fireball.

6/20/11 My excitement kept me from even, thinking about the time. I’m In Dunnellon, Florida. I was facing south/southeast. I, at first sight, thought it was a falling star. I called to my husband to hurry and see. What I thought was a falling star, just got bigger and didn’t burn out. We watched , until it went behind the trees out of sight, Between five to seven seconds We couldn’t judge the distance, though it seemed very large. It was AMAZING! One of the coolest things I’ve seen. Definitely not, a falling star nor an airplane.

I was walking my friend to her car on August 6, 2011 around 11:30pm. Orlando, Florida facing North. When all of a sudden we both see this huge bright light come straight down from the sky with these amazing colors-first yellow, orange, red then changes to blues & greens!!! It was so bright we were speechless I couldn’t even speak to tell her to look but she was facing the same way and we both got to see this amazing show.
