Reports Report 1923dr (Event 1923-2024)

Observer
Name Tom C
Experience Level 3/5
Remarks My backpacking buddy and another hiker both saw this, along with my buddy's wife, who was separately in Bethlehem, PA. We were on a ridge along the Appalachian Trail that overlooks the valley below watching for satellites and stargazing. Not completely sure about the timing, since it might have been several minutes after seeing it that I sent a text about it.

Persistent train
Observation Yes
Duration 2s
Length 10°
Remarks glowing trail with sparks/bursts of red/orange, green, blue
Terminal flash
Observation Yes
Remarks I thought it was a satellite, then plane as it got significantly brighter. But the head got much brighter and the sparks/bursts of color starting showing up in the tail. It seemed so much closer (bigger) than the usual small "sewing needle" meteorites i've seen in the past.
Fragmentation
Observation Yes
Remarks I'm assuming the sparks/bursts of color in the tail were due to fragmentation
