I am an amateur. I have been able in the past to observe a good 50 or so meteors in in my life, the majority of which I have been in remote areas for the perseid showers in late summer Texas. If I can put the 'typical" meteor as a 1 on a ten scale.. that is to say one that is a VERY brief faint streak that trails maybe 1-4" at best as measured by a ruler held at arms length, then this observation as a 3 to 4 rating on that scale of brightness, size and intensity. Prior to this I had only one sighting meriting a higher rating than 1, and that was by accident in October 2012 while driving from Chicago to NYC. While some conical shape was visible in the 10/12 sighting, this one had a definitive conical shape that grew starting from the moment it first appeared until it terminated. The color green and sparkling trail/tail was so noticeable, that until I checked the news, I was very open to the possibility that this was a firework of some kind in that there was a high bluff to my right that might have enabled such a launch, and the color green (xmas), and the location in a college town all supporting that option. I would highly doubt i would ever be so honored as to have such a chance again in my life to see such an event. |
