I am not an astronomy observer. I was walking the dog in the evening and my head was basically in a horizontal viewing position when I first saw it at the upper periphery of my vision - over my house. I instantly looked up overhead and could see a very bright light green 'thing' probably no larger than a softball descending to the ground on a rather straight arc. When I first saw it I would guess it was a 150-200 ft above ground. It looked like some sort of firework except that it was falling too fast and with too much momentum to do anything but follow it's course. It was on a course to land in my neighbor's yard. It extinguished just above ground, no higher than a rooftop, and I saw an ember/ash drift westerly with the light west wind for a moment. It's path appeared approx west to east, though it did drop with a steep angle. I did not think to search the ground for a remnant because my first impression was that it 'burned up' as evidenced by the ash. I heard nothing. I think if it is possible I will look when it is daylight but I expect it would be difficult to find on a cut lawn with melting snow cover. There were no observable aircraft overhead. My furnace was not operating. |
