A dumbfounded and revelatory experience. In the 25 years we have lived out here on this height of land overlooking the district we have seen many spectacular displays of weather and the stars. This ranks up at the top of the list.

Remarks
A brilliant 2 or 3 ° wide carmine red streak starting just above nw horizon passing almost directly overhead disappearing to the sw behind treeline bright enough to read a newspaper and illuminate yard clearly. Either side of trajectory a 10° swath of glowing white light that persisted for more than a few seconds. Never seen anything remotely like it.
