Reports Report 623e (Event 623-2011)

Observer

Experience Level 4/5
Remarks I did not see the beginning. Rather, the sky flashed above/behind me while I was watching a satellite through binoculars. I whirled around and saw the last second or less of the fireball, going straight down between Virgo and Leo (Saturn/Porrima to Denebola area). Due to not seeing the beginning but the sky flash instead, my magnitude estimate is rough, but I think it had to be at least -6 to light up my sky. This is a +5 limiting magnitude location, exurban/semi-rural, and the sky was very nice and of course moonless. Opinion: I think it's easier to type "southwest" or whatever than to try to figure out where to click on the map. And anyway, I really wasn't sure of the compass direction because I had been looking through binoculars in the eastern sky when the flash occurred. But I did know where it went in the sky, the part of the track that I saw. I suggest that you should offer (reasonably) experienced meteor observers a way to give a sky position directly. I don't even know if I clicked in the same direction for the end as the beginning. I'm not pleased with that part of the interface and think it will lead to reporting errors. IMO.
