Remarks We first noticed a very bright but fuzzy star next to Mt. Whitney in the west. We watched it in that position for quite a while. I asked my husband where did that star come from? We’d been watching the stars every night as we were camping for several weeks. We looked up again and it had moved to the southern sky, and was moving fast now. I went to get my camera but just then it sent out a wide, almost split tail. The tail grew in width, then the whole thing seemed to explode and lighten that part of sky. There was an afterglow, then it faded. It was truly phenomenal.
