Reports Report 3996aa (Event 3996-2017)

Remarks I was moving from Virginia to North Carolina that night. Ironically at the time I was not into meteorites. About 2 or 3 months ago I became fascinated with them. If I had known the importance of an event like this I would recorded video or stopped my vehicle to get a better record of where I was and exact place. I did however record a "polo" (video message) to some friends letting them know what I had just seen. The option of the map was limiting only because I chose an estimate of where I was. I stopped to get a hotel room for the night at about 1:30am. If needed I could probably trace back a better estimate of exactly what part of Interstate 58 I was on. I was heading West on Interstate 58 at about 12:30am when it first looked like it was coming straight at me! This was somewhere between Franklin, Va. and Interstate 85 also in Va. At first I thought it was a plain then I thought something else (because it kept getting bigger and there were no blinking lights), then it slowly continued its downward decent and then steadily running mostly parallel to the interstate. The meteor was going in a Western direction in relation to the interstate. It was chilly out and I had my windows up so I do not recall hearing any booms or not but did see the long fireball and watched it split off a good size fragment from the original mass. It looked to be about 1 - 2 city blocks away from the interstate and the area looked like mostly farming or hunting land. In the last 2 months I have learned just how important it is between a fall and a find. This was a witnessed fall! If or when someone finds this I would love to have a small fragment for my personal collection because this is the first time in my life that I have ever seen anything like this! I have seen a good number of shooting stars but this one was so bright and from what I now know the angel which it came in on is also rare. From what I saw at least 2 large pieces of this meteor hit the ground somewhere. There were other cars on the interstate. Not many but a few and I guarantee they saw this meteor as well. If you have questions please ask. If this has already been found or found in the future could you please let me know? Thanks!

Persistent train
Observation Yes
Duration 3s
Length
Remarks It was nighttime but the sky was very clear. The trail seemed to be about as long as a car length or so from where I could see it.
Terminal flash
Observation Yes
Remarks The meteor was following almost parallel to the interstate in the opposite direction. The meteor was flying steady and then a slightly smaller piece split off in a flash. The smaller (second part of the meteor looked to be about 1/5th to 1/13 the size of the main portion. The trajectory is what got my attention because I have never seen one that long, steady in flight, or low before (only simple shooting stars).
Fragmentation
Observation Yes
Remarks Yes. Please read above.
