Reports Report 322bk (Event 322-2012)

Observer
Name Elizabeth
Experience Level 1/5
Remarks Due to its close proximity, massively large size, and orange colour, at the time I did not know I was seeing a fireball falling from space. I thought stars and fireballs always looked white and far away. It was not until the news reports next day that I discovered that what I had seen was in fact a fireball. I thought at the time that what I was seeing must be some amateur firework that someone in my town was messing around with in a dangerous manner. I was worried it would start a fire where it fell, so I stood watching it to wait and see where it would end up. To my surprise it didn\'t seem to fall down anywhere, but just kept getting further and further away, until it no longer looked like a ball of fire with a tail streaking behind it. It now looked the same size as any large star and was just a dot in the sky; a circle of orange light with no tail any more.

Remarks There were no cars or other background noise pollution and the streets were quiet at the time, so I was able to hear the fireball as well as see it. I heard a faint but definite wooshing sound. It sounded a bit like a bunsen burner in operation. I have thought very hard how best to describe the sound, and that is the closest comparison I can think of.
