Reports Report 2316h (Event 2316-2019)

Observer
Name Bob W
Experience Level 3/5
Remarks I have seen many meteor showers over the last 20 years as I live in a rural area. I have also witnessed two confirmed events of space junk entering our atmosphere and both times they were very bright and had a green glow. Both of these events were on the local news and they said the reason for the green glow was due to copper burning up on re-entry. I believe that what I witnessed this time was space junk burning up and not a meteor because of the amount of time it was visible. I have witnessed some very large meteors and while they are very bright and last a second or two, this event was not the same.

Persistent train
Observation Yes
Duration 4s
Length 40°
Remarks It lasted for several seconds. Started as a dull white streak with bright white pieces breaking off but continuing along the same path. Two other people observed this display that lasted for a up to 5 seconds. I enjoy watching meteors and I believe this to be something slower than usual but had the same breaking up characteristics as a meteor. I was thinking that this must have been some space junk but did not observe any noticeable color changes in the stream. I would have expected to see green or blue , as I have seen in other recorded man made objects falling from space.
Terminal flash
Observation Yes
Remarks Observed several pieces breaking off and the pieces would glow bright white and burn out. The light trail was at least 10 to 15 degrees of length. Most of the trail was more of a dull white light. That’s what made the other brighter pieces stand out.
Fragmentation
Observation Yes
Remarks Same as above. I was looking hard to see if I could notice and color variations but did not see any colors other than white. The pieces, as they broke off usually got very bright before burning out all together. Had it not been for the trees in my yard , I would guess to say that this event probably lasted a couple of seconds longer as I could still see remnants of the trail thru the trees .
