Reports Report 1035i (Event 1035-2012)

Remarks I was sitting in my back yard facing approximately WNW enjoying the evening twilight. I suddenly saw a bright moving light low to the southerly direction. My first impression was a well-lighted aircraft heading toward Inyokern airport for a landing, because it seeded to b moving so slow. Then I thought it might be the International Space Station, ISS. Finally I realized it was a fireball or piece of space junk reentering the atmosphere. It seemed to move rather slowly and finally flared up and disappeared. When it flared, it would seem as though it was directly south of Inyokern airport and there would be debris soon falling , but then I realized it was much farther away than that. It seemed to come from just below the first quarter gibbous moon. According to my sky chart, the moon would have been about172 degrees at an elevation of about 32 degrees, so the trajectory was fairly low at this location.
