I am NOT an astronomer, but I am an engineer with many years of physics and an interest in space and have a pretty good understanding of the solar system. What I saw did not look at all like it came down. It caught my eye at the start and I followed it for 5 - 7 seconds untill it winked out far to the west north west. It did not look any lower at the end than at the start. It looked very much like it skipped off the atmosphere and back out at the end. The fragment that broke off slowed curved downward sharply before it went out.

Remarks
Meteor went straight across the sky. I saw it pretty much from beginning to end. About halfway through a fragment broke off and arced downward. It lasted maybe a second & burned out.
