Woke up to take down scope after imaging series of Veil Nebula subs on new moon night. Saw very large fireball low and to the north, angled down toward the horizon. Ball itself was smaller than size of full moon. Ball briefly streaked, disappeared, then reappeared, then disappeared just over horizon. Sky was generally clear, but there were low clouds near the horizon - meteor may have come in & out of clouds or varied brightness on its own. Couldn’t tell which. Mildly freaked me out, as ball was large enough that I was worried it was a plane going down. Listened for boom or crash, but heard nothing. Watched sky for about five minutes, but saw nothing else (would have watched longer, but had to work Thursday and it was nearing 5AM). Views are long here as cabin is at 2,700 feet on crest of South Branch Mtn. |
