I was walking the dog at night, without light, and noticed the hillside getting brighter, and simply thought it was a vehicle, then I noticed that my shadow was moving in a way that no vehicle could possibly cause, and I turned and looked up, and saw a very bright meteor. fireball and watched it for about 2 seconds until it disappeared behind the mountains at 297 deg True from my location. I did report it at the time to president@rasnz.org.nz - so it may already be in your database, but just found you database.
I spend a lot of time out at night without lights, and have seen many meteors (tens of thousands) and even one daytime fireball, that did calve off several chunks, but that was a very long time ago, about1983 - observed from the Firth of Thames in the North Island of New Zealand, and it traveled across about 120 degree of the sky from SE to SW and I lost it over the Horizon after about 15 seconds. |
