I had just walked out onto my deck, which is on a cliff (about 1090 ft. elevation) directly overlooking the Ohio River, facing Sewickley, Pa. I was noticing how much like Halloween the Moon looked as it was a bright orange at the time, when all of a sudden, across the river, to the left of the Moon and a bit higher, I saw a very bright distinctive white flash. It appeared about half way between Sewickley, Pa. and the location of the Moon at that time, about half the distance higher as the distance from the horizon to the Moon. Within a second it was gone, ( if I had blinked or had been looking anywhere else, I would have missed it). A smokey trail followed, which lasted a few seconds and faded as it lengthened and over the course of a few seconds.
The moon was a bright orange at the time but it was definitely brighter than the Moon appeared an hour later. I can see a considerable distance up and down the Ohio River, at least 15 miles in either direction, and this was the first time I have ever seen anything like this in my time. I'm not sure if I filled out the information location as well as could be - it is very difficult to say exactly where it might have happened, only where I was and it was in location/direction to me. What I can say is that it was so exciting. especially if it turns out that it was a falling star! |
