I was looking up to gauge where the planets were, standing in the middle of my street (no street lighting in our neighborhood) facing due south, to my upper left a bright red streak appeared. At first I thought a neighbor still had some large fireworks they were shooting off, but this streak of light was much wider in diameter than any fireworks I have ever seen. The color was bright red with some white mixed in, the color remained consistent throughout my few seconds of observation. The trajectory of the fireball was due east to west lasted maybe 2-3 seconds. The object appeared to slow down some, then the color went out and I thought I saw some smoke (possibly grey in color) at the point the object was not visible anymore. At that moment I started to realize I might have witnessed a meteor coming thru the atmosphere. The smoke seem to disappear within a second. I stood still and waited approximately 2 minutes to see if I heard any noise. No noise of any kind was heard. I grew up in the 1950's and am familiar with the sound of a sonic boom, which is what I was expecting, again I could not register noise from the direction of the object. |
