I've seen probably more than a dozen or so of what people refer to as 'shooting stars' before in my life however this was the brightest and nearest and have never seen one fragment before.

It split into what looked like three pieces, the outer two dropped back and faded away, the center piece continued for a few more seconds then disappeared.
