Reports Report 8321a (Event 8321-2020)

Observer
Name Helen H
Experience Level 2/5
Remarks We were lying on a picnic blanket stargazing. It started behind the houses at our feet and we sat up, whipped our heads around to face the opposite direction to see it travel across the sky. We started to notice it when we heard a faint roaring noise that started to crescendo and then it appeared over the roofs of the houses and it flew across the sky. It was MASSIVE! It took up the entire sky and it glowed much brighter than the moon! Its tail and the body of the meteor was the size of the milky way (not as wide though). It was probably at its loudest and brightest a little bit past the top of our heads. My friend and I were scared for our lives since we had never seen anything like this before. We talked about it for a while, trying to understand what we just saw, then we went to bed. A day or two later, we tried to do some research. We looked on the news (because we thought it was that big to be reported on) to try and find out more about it, but we couldn't find anything on this. It was also around the time when there was a comet with the largest tail visible to the earth. We speculated it was this, but it definitely was not the comet as my friend actually saw the comet a few days later and it was much much smaller (not even comparable in size). We were the only ones to see or hear it out of the 6 other residents staying at the house at the time, as the rest of our friends went to bed earlier that night (early morning). I am reporting this now after seeing this almost 3 years ago because occasionally I think about it since it was one of the craziest things I've seen in my life, and only now did I do some research to find out what it was. It looks similar to some images on the start of the form but so so so much larger (I can't even emphasize enough how big it was). I had only been stargazing a few times before this since I live in the city. And so, we spent every night looking at the sky to find constellations using an app and to spot shooting stars. Sometimes, it feels like we were the only two people who saw this meteor, since it felt so close to us due to how big it was and how much of the sky it took up, and when researching about this meteor again, I tried to see if it was recorded anywhere but couldn't find anything. If it is possible, I'd really like to know more about what we saw, and the likelihood of seeing a meteor like this. I apologise for this super long description, but I tried to describe it the best I could. This entire experience when written out doesn't sound believable, but I have an image from the night to prove that my friend and I were stargazing. I think I could even try draw out a little animation to help visualise it better. I hope this does get recorded as an event, and again, I'd love to know more about it!

Remarks It sounded like it was ripping the sky, super loud! I was with my friend at the time, we were both screaming and the meteor matched our volume - it felt really close to us. The most similar sound I can think of is a bunsen burner when it is non luminous - roaring flame sound.
