I was not looking in the direction of the flash when it occurred. Most all of the sky brightened with the flash, but it was evident that its origin was almost directly to the south.

Terminal flash
Observation
Yes
Remarks
Much of the sky suddenly brightened with a flash. It was like when a close and strong inter-cloud lightning bolt lights up most of the sky during a nighttime thunderstorm. I was initially looking in a different direction but could tell that the flash seemed to originate to the South.
Fragmentation
Observation
Yes
Remarks
Immediately upon looking south, I saw a bright fireball that quickly fragmented into 2 or 3 pieces, looking like sparks.
