Remarks |
I was driving with my wife as a passenger. We were driving westward on Federal Rd at approximately 55 mph. The address supplied in this report is approximate and could be off by a mile or so either way along Federal Rd.
My wife and I both noticed this at about the same moment. Throughout this observation the object appeared nearly motionless in the sky about 30 degrees above the horizon and somewhat off to our right which places it nearly due west of our position at that time. It was a very bright white light, appearing almost like a bit of Magnesium burning in the sky. My first thought was that it was an aircraft landing light or something similar. Wright-Patterson AFB is not far away so we see things like that from time to time.
The duration of the event was approximately 2 seconds but may have been a little longer. About half way through this time period, a less bright bit seemed to break away and drift up and to the left from the brighter object at a steady rate. Duration of the fragment was about half a second. Maximum departure from the main object was about 15 seconds of arc.
When the main object disappeared from view, there was no flash and no report (but remember that we were in a moving car with the windows closed). The decrease in the object's brightness at the end was not abrupt. It was more like watching an incandescent light bulb turn off than watching an LED turn off. The color remained white as it disappeared.
