It was a smoke trail. the object broke up as it lit up very bright and each object that split from it left a smoke trail. It probably lasted about 2-4 mins.

As it streaked across the sky from right to left in the western sky it was greenish and broke into several pieces. It got progressively brighter where it was lighting up half the sky. Each piece left a smoke trail and eventually ended in a bright flash.
