I first thought it may be a plane blowing up in the sky with several pieces burning red just disappearing after a few seconds.

It was behind me a bit and picked up a flash with my peripheral vision. I looked out the window of our car to the north and looked back east a bit to see the fireballs. It was a WOW!! I saw it break up in to red pieces.
