We were facing directly up towards the mountain side, so our initial report of the level of sky the meteor was seen would have been inaccurate. It started high and the large dark mass at the tip was still present when it disappeared from our view below the mountain horizon.

White smoke trail, rather like that left by an aircraft, but pointing left to right downwards towards earth. It gradually faded.
