Reports Report 3016ds (Event 3016-2016)

Observer
Name Oliver F
Experience Level 1/5
Remarks The object was viewed from indoors through a sliding glass door while seated, so my field of view did not permit me to see where it first appeared in the sky. (i.e., it was fully illuminated at the point it entered my field of vision.) I cannot rule out the possibility of this object being some form of projectile launched from the hills nearby, however the angle of descent, brightness, lack of any screech or report (typical of bottle rockets), and limited number of likely origins in the vicinity makes it difficult for me to arrive at an explanation that fits better than this being something that fell from a high altitude. The hillside neighborhood is largely covered with dry brush that poses a serious fire risk, so the likelihood of one of the few homeowners here launching a firework or flare is probably slim. There are nearby hiking trails that something could have potentially been launched from, however the height, speed, angle of descent, and distance of travel don't feel quite right for that explanation. The object ceased to be illuminated several meters before it ostensibly struck the ground. I only observed this single occurrence, and it appeared and disappeared very rapidly.
